Radon remains the largest environmental cancer risk, and every hour here in the United States dies from lung cancer related to radon. Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless radioactive gas that occurs naturally in the soil here in Minnesota, and is responsible for being the second leading cause of cancer in America. The good news is that the risk of lung cancer as a result of radon is preventable.
Radon can enter homes thru cracks and openings that may exist in basements or foundation floors and walls. All homes here in Crow Wing County and in Minnesota should be tested for radon according to the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). The MDH estimates that one in every three homes in Minnesota has radon levels high enough to pose a serious health risk if exposed over a large period of time. To test your home for radon you can obtain a kit by contacting the Land Service Department at 218-824-1125 or 322 Laurel Street Suite 14 Brainerd MN 56401. After testing if your home is found to have a level over 4.0 pCi/L you will want to consider having verification testing done and look into installing a mitigation system which will remove the radon out of your home.
For more information on radon testing your home visit www.health.state.mn.us/radon, or contact the Minnesota Department of Health Indoor Air Unit at 651-201-4601.
