Treat your others as you would like to be treated. The golden rule applies to kayaks too! We have shared a list of friendly reminders when caring for your kayak during paddling season.
- Your Kayak doesn’t appreciate being dragged on the ground. If you don’t have someone who can help carry it to the water, you have a couple options. Invest in a kayak cart or learn how to correctly lift a kayak alone. Here are some basic instructions from REI.
- Keep it dry and cover it. Always remember to dry your kayak after use. If it’s being stored outside, turn it upside down and keep it off the ground to allow air flow. A cover or tarp will help keep away UV rays, moisture and unwanted critters and animals.
- The sun can damage your kayak too. Begin and end the season by applying a spray on UV protector. This will keep the color from fading and ensure that your kayak looks its best even several years down the road. This can be found at your sporting goods store or certainly online.
- When caring for your kayak, don’t forget about your life jacket. Each year, check for damage before use. Never store in an enclosed plastic bag or container, this will trap moisture and can create a breeding ground for mold.
