Winter will be here before we know it, and as it approaches it is time to start bringing our gardening to an end. Now is the time to start preparing your garden for spring next year before the cold wintery weather hits. Did you know it is still not too late to plant bulbs for next spring as long as the ground is not frozen?
Perennials
If the ground is not frozen now is the time to plant spring bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, and crocuses. As your perennials die take the time to cut them back and add them to your compost pile.
Shrubs and Trees
Tree roots thrive on late-autumn planting making it a great time to get them in the ground. You should have stopped fertilizing by this point, and now is the perfect time to mulch your roses. Towards the end of the month wrap your trees trunks with paper to protect from winter weather.
Transplanting
Now is the time when trees, plants, and shrubs are in their dormant cycle and are ideal for transplanting. You will first need to dig up the large root ball, and as much of the root system as you can. Then proceed to dig a new hole big enough to hold the new plant with plenty of room for new soil. Proceed by replanting quickly before the roots have time to air dry. Remember when you replant to use a mixture of your existing soil and fertilizer. If you have smaller trees stake them so they are not damaged by winter winds.
Weeding
Even with winter just around the corner November is still the time to continue to weed. If you decide to stop weeding your garden you risk the chance of dealing with a variety of different diseases and insects.
Lawn Care
Place on your yard slow-release winter fertilizer this month if you didn’t do it in the month’s past. Do not forget to keep mowing your grass until it stops growing.
