The wonderful city of Brainerd was founded in 1873, and the city seal that was created at that time has served the city for the past 140 years. The seal resembles the state’s seal with just the name of Brainerd added. The well-known seal with an American Indian riding a horse behind a farmer working in his field no longer seems to fit what Brained is all about. Mayor James Wallin said, “It was fine for Minnesota, but not for Brainerd.”
Mayor James Wallin designed a new seal to better fit Brainerd. “It was time Brainerd get its own identity,” Wallin said. The new city seal includes the trademark Brainerd water tower and it stands over two train cars. These structures played a very integral part in the building of the city. The seal also includes two trees that are next to the towers, these stand for the logging industry in our area and the seal will also include a stream of water representing the Mississippi River.
The new city seal will become more noticeable once Mary Wallin receives a double brass stamp when he will then start using it for all official city business. At this time the city council has not adopted the new seal, but according to Wallin it is not required to. Wallin would ideally like to see the new seal become the new logo for the city. “We are known worldwide,” he said. “I’m proud of the heritage we have.”
